You're Invited: International Women's Week with The Advocates for Human Rights

Happy International Women's Day! Here's a day to acknowledge our moms, sisters, daughters, friends, girls, and women, who hold up half the sky. And The Advocates for Human Rights are hosting a plethora of activities to recognize the occasion - see below for the various opportunities to celebrate! Thanks to all the special ladies who help make our families, organizations, communities, and Minnesota such a powerhouse!

March 1-3: Not About Bombs A collection of contemporary works by eminent female Iraqi artists explores an identity in flux. Curated by Tricia Khutoretsky. Co-sponosored by Intermedia Arts and The Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project. Staff members will be present to discuss human rights and The Advocates' work. Ten Thousand Villages will donate 20% of proceeds to The Advocates. Join us for a discussion of the book and a broader look at Women's Rights. This event is free and open to the public March 9: Women in Afghanistan: Securing their Future A talk with David Cortright in honor of International Women’s Day. David Cortright directs Policy Studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies and co-authored Afghan Women Speak: Enhancing Security and Human Rights in Afghanistan. Congressman Keith Ellison and The Advocates' Executive Director, Robin Phillips will give opening remarks at this event. March 13: Film Screening of Crime after Crime Sponsored by World Without Genocide, this film follows the legal battle to free Dorborah Peagler, a woman imprisoned for killing her abuser. Date: March 13, 7 - 9 p.m. Location: William Mitchell College of Law, 875 Summit Avenue, St. Paul, MN This event is free and open to the public. CLE credits available. March 21: The Women’s Human Rights Film Series screens Peace Unveiled This film looks at the women’s movement in Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban and follows the women involved in the peace talks. Date: March 21, 7 p.m. Location: Metropolitan State University, Founders Hall Auditorium, 700 East Seventh Street This event is free and open to the public. A discussion will follow the screening March 27: Symposium: Ending Violence Against Women Sponsored by World Without Genocide. Expert panel includes, Cheryl Thomas, Director of the Women’s Human Rights Program at The Advocates for Human Rights; Nadia Costa, Attorney featured in the film, Crime After Crime; Suzanne Koepplinger, Executive Director, Minnesota Indian Women’s Resource Center.
