[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] June 2013

[#mnrising Dispatch] June 2013

Just a few days ago, we hosted a thought-provoking, "Collaborative Competence: Cultivating Capacity for Collective Leadership" World Cafe with friends new and old at The Engine Room! We considered what current and emerging trends tell us about how Minnesota will look in 5 and 30 years, explored the role that leadership has played in shaping what our state looks like today as well as the role it could play in shaping our future communities, and deliberated about what tools and competencies the rising generation will need to successfully navigate and shape Minnesota's future. As we move forward in developing a Collaborative Competence Learning Labs Series to study and practice these critical skills in an inclusive and ever-evolving way, we invite you to join the conversation by indicating your interest in serving on the design team for this initiative to minnesotarising[at]gmail.com or by signing up to take part in an "Our Minnesota" Cascading Conversation. We look forward to hearing about your experiences in leading change and the capacities and perspectives you consider critical for leading into the future!

Diane Tran, @YNPNTC Blog

Think of someone you greatly admire or consider a hero. While ruminating about their secrets for success, have you ever also considered how much they may have failed to get to where they are? While it may not be the first question that springs to mind when you're curious about how they accomplished certain heroic feats, doesn't it make them seem more human and relatable once you know that they've also struggled and overcome obstacles along the way? Accepting Applications: 2013-2014 NorthStar Youth Work Fellowship

The Minnesota Department of Education, the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at Augsburg College, and Youthprise are accepting applications for the 2013-2014 NorthStar Youth Worker Fellowship. Aiming to engage youth work practitioners in exploration, reflection, and study in order to advance the field, the program facilitates a unique cohort experience and culminates in position papers that will inform systems development in Minnesota. Learn more below and consider applying by the June 30 deadline!

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013-14 NorthStar Youth Worker Fellowship. The NorthStar Youth Work Fellowship, previously known as the Minnesota Walkabout Fellowship, is not a typical class or workshop series. The purpose of the Fellowship is to engage a cohort of experienced youth work practitioners in exploration, reflection, and study to generate more wisdom, language, and leadership in the field of youth work in Minnesota.

In 2013-14, the Fellowship will examine issues of autonomy and authority in youth work practice, the field of youth work, and youth worker professional development. Each of the fellows will formulate an inquiry question and spend the year reviewing relevant research and writings; tapping the local wisdom of their professional network; engaging in conversation with local and national leaders in the field; and writing a position paper that will inform systems development and field advancement in Minnesota.

The 2013-14 Fellowship is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Education, the Center for Democracy and Citizenship at Augsburg College, and Youthprise.

You can learn more about the fellowship and download the application by visiting: http://www.augsburg.edu/democracy/. The Fellowship requirements are listed in the Overview document, and include consistent participation, monthly meetings, outside readings, and producing a position paper for publication. There is no cost to you or your organization for the Fellowship, and Fellows will receive a $500 stipend, two University credits (tuition fees apply), books and materials, and extensive contact with local and national field leaders.

The application deadline is June 30, 2013. For questions or more information on the NorthStar Fellowship, contact:  Sheila Oehrlein at sheila.oehrlein@state.mn.us  (651) 582-8448

You're Invited: Generation NOW Leadership Visit

Modeled after the InterCity Leadership Visit, the Generation Now Leadership Visit is a 3-day trip to Milwaukee for current and rising Minnesota young professional leaders. This is a great opportunity for emerging leaders and mid-career adults (around 25-40 years of age) who want to expand their leadership skills, both personally and professionally, through a hands-on learning program. The trip will introduce participants to a wide variety of innovative ideas, programs, and people in Milwaukee, and provide a unique cohort experience that will create a powerful catalyst for engaged action back home in Minnesota. Fill out the application form today and prepare to get on the bus!

Generation Now Leadership Visit
August 14 to 16, 2013

This trip will benefit anyone looking to expand their leadership skills, both personally and professionally, through a hands-on interactive program. The trip will introduce participants to innovative ideas, programs and initiatives, which may be adapted and replicated in our community; and will contribute to cross-sector relationships in the metro area and beyond. The shared experience of the trip will result in a more cohesive team working to tackle issues facing our region.

We will create an interactive and stimulating program that will foster networking, creative thinking and discussion among participants and community leaders. We will take the opportunity to see, experience, and explore as much of Milwaukee as possible through presentations by leaders and other sharp-minded thinkers from the nonprofit, public, and for-profit sectors who influence community decision-making and have a vested interest in community development.

After considerable research, we chose Milwaukee for our inaugural visit, as the community gives us the opportunity to explore such topics as attracting/retaining talent, intergenerational collaboration, and public/private partnerships. Milwaukee and Minneapolis-Saint Paul share many similarities that will allow us to learn from their successes and challenges.

The GNLV delegation will depart the Twin Cities at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday August 14 for the six hour luxury motorcoach ride to Milwaukee, WI. There will be opportunities for interactive discussions, informative materials and video presentations comparing Minneapolis-Saint Paul to Milwaukee during the bus ride. The delegation will depart Milwaukee at 1:00 p.m. for the return trip, arriving back to the Twin Cities at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Friday August 16.

The total trip fee is $1,250 per person. This fee includes all transportation, single hotel accommodations for two nights, 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, 2 evening receptions, all tours, presentations and all trip-related materials.

Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis with the final deadline being July 1st. Complete the registration form and return to Wendy Helgeson at Whelgeson@citizensleague.org.
For additional information visit our webpage, or follow us on twitter and like our Facebook page. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

Get on the bus, head to Milwaukee, connect to other Generation Now Leaders and get our region moving in the right direction!
