[Guest Post] Learning How to Fail
Thanks to Nick Stuber for serving on the host team for the Minnesota Rising Fail Lab: Failing Into the Future, and for sharing his thoughts below on the May 4, 2013 event!
On Saturday, May 4, an intrepid group gathered to engage in the exploration and act of failing through MN Rising’s Fail Lab: Failing into the future. The afternoon began with an insightful presentation by Allie Moen and Maureen Ramirez in which they shared their wisdom about how to contend with and prepare for moments of failure. Next, we collectively engaged in the act of failing through a host of fail stations, which included Jenga, writing the lyrics to a song with your less dominate hand (an act that I utterly failed at), and recalling your grade school geography lessons by filling-in blank maps of the world’s continents. The fail stations offered us an opportunity to have fun and explore failure in low risk situations.
For me, the most rewarding and invigorating component of the Fail Lab was collectively discussing the varying dimensions and impacts of failure through World Café table conversations. Here are some of the key points I took away that were unearthed by participants during the conversations: Failure is the often-unacknowledged process of learning that undergirds experimentation and innovation; learn to harness the unifying effect of failure; failure makes a person real, it is an integral part of being human; think about the definition of success and how it relates to the definition of failure; we need to explore how we can construct space for failure within organizations. Finally, I want to highlight some of the ideas that people took away from participating in the Fail Lab:
- “If you’re too worried about short-term failure it can lead to stagnation, which is long-term failure.”
- “Failure is based on certain standards—if we’re working on issues others haven’t been able to solve, it’s okay that we might not either.”
- “Exposure therapy: tolerance for failing, resilience.”
- “If there is no standard for success then there is no standard for failure, so be bold in innovating ideas in emergent places.”

Breaking the rules with integrity
Wednesday, July 24, 2013 from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Steve Jobs broke the rules when it comes to design. Rosa Parks broke the rules when it comes to discrimination. A first line supervisor at a chem plant broke the rules when he violated established protocol to avoid contaminating a nearby watershed.
Talk about breaking the rules is difficult when the headlines are filled with recurring news of leaders failing on their commitments, betraying promises, and stretching the rules for their own profit and gain.
Steve Boehlke understands, however, that the creative spirit will not thrive and innovation will not flourish without the courage to break the rules. With three basic principles and lively stories, Steve will challenge us to examine with one another our understanding of integrity even as we strive to be leaders who want to make a difference.
- Identify the rules of a community/culture/organization
- Assess when you are personally willing to take risks and break rules to make change
- Network with peers in a similar position
Networking and registration starting at 5:30pm, program from 6:00 - 7:30pm.
Steve Boehlke
Whether speaking with emerging leaders in Zagreb, Croatia, scientists and engineers at NASA's Johnson Space Center or students and faculty at the African Leadership Academy in Johannesburg, SA, Steve blends the passionate voice of a former youth leader with an edgy sense of business. More than 20 years ago he established SFB Associates, a global consulting practice in leadership development, focusing extensively on senior leaders in R&D. Corporate clients have included Cargill, ExxonMobil, HP, Merck, Nestle, among others. Author of the book, "50 Lessons on Leading for Those with Little Time for Reading," Steve is now devoting more time to equipping the next generation of leaders to serve. His message is simple: Leadership is born from having the courage to be who you are.
