[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] July 2013

[#mnrising Dispatch] July 2013

Save the date! We're thrilled to invite you to join us on Saturday, November 16, 2013 from 10am to 6pm at DLR Group in Minneapolis for the 4th annual Minnesota Rising Un/Conference: "Cultivating Capacity for Collective Leadership." While planning is just getting underway (see below for details on how to get involved), we're confident that this year's event will help us make our individual and collective marks on Minnesota, continue building the network for what's next, and leverage expansive leadership for our state's future! In the meantime, we hope you're engaging with all the beauty that Minnesota has to offer in the summertime, whether splashing around on one of 11,842 lakes, mini-golfing at the Walker Art Museum, or cheering on the hometown team at a Twins game. Remember to lather on the sunscreen, check for ticks, and stay safe out there!

Minnesota state economist Tom Stinson: The exit interview

Lori Sturdevant, Star Tribune

Minnesota is economically stronger than you might think. Make that: Minnesota is economically stronger than Tom Stinson thought it was 26 years ago, when he moved into the humble office in the Centennial Building that says "state economist" on the door . . . He retires from his state job wanting Minnesotans to know what he discovered to his surprise in 1987 and holds is still true: Despite perpetual frets about the business climate and fears and about job flight, Minnesota is in good economic shape. FailLab

Learning How To Fail

Nick Stuber, Minnesota Rising Guest Blogger

On Saturday, May 4, an intrepid group gathered to engage in the exploration and act of failing through MN Rising's Fail Lab: Failing into the future. The afternoon began with an insightful presentation by Allie Moen and Maureen Ramirez in which they shared their wisdom about how to contend with and prepare for moments of failure. Next, we collectively engaged in the act of failing through a host of fail stations, which included Jenga, writing the lyrics to a song with your less dominate hand (an act that I utterly failed at), and recalling your grade school geography lessons by filling in blank maps of the world's continents. Why millennials are leaving the church | July 27, 2013 | CNN.com
Time and again, the assumption among Christian leaders, and evangelical leaders in particular, is that the key to drawing twenty-somethings back to church is simply to make a few style updates - edgier music, more casual services, a coffee shop in the fellowship hall, a pastor who wears skinny jeans, an updated Web site that includes online giving.

How Millennials are Reducing Food Waste | July 30, 2013 | USDA.gov
Today's college students and young professionals are particularly attuned to the environmental issues that face our nation. Universities across the United States are often stuck with excess food left over from dining halls, sporting events, and other social gatherings that more often than not goes directly into dumpsters. While many young adults across the country are working their way through school and loan payments, they are also becoming increasingly cognizant of the efforts underway at their Universities to reduce food waste.
