We launched our first official endeavor, which is the delivery of a 5-week Krypton Course based on the work of best selling author Seth Godin. This particular course is entitled "Go: How to Overcome Fear, Pick Yourself, & Start a Project that Matters." We are fortunate that Travis Wilson, who recently started Wilson Career Coaching in Rochester, agreed to facilitate the course for us. It is evident after our first gathering that he was exactly the right person for the job! One important aspect of our vision for Colidr centers around creating spaces where the growing community of changemakers in Rochester can connect, inspire one another, co-learn, and co-create. [Read more.] Help a Minnesota Maker Succeed! HAMMS HAMMS Event is a one-day, dog friendly, crowdfunding market for men and women. HAMMS Event was born out of the "shop local" and "shop small business" movement and around the fact that small businesses need to stick together. The HAMMS Event takes place at the former Hamm's brewery shipping docks. Shop 25,000 square feet of products for men, women, and their pooches. Meet the Minnesota Makers themselves, nibble on food from both vendors and food trucks, sip vino and samples of local brew. Funding is difficult for micro businesses, so we have put a spin on the "crowd funding" concept by choosing one talented Minnesota Maker (by a game of chance) to receive up to $5000 of ticket sales to help them bring their business to the next level. The Deep Dives are an amazing opportunity for our local members During the YNPN National Leaders Conference there is an amazing opportunity available for our local members: Two day-long workshops facilitated by two great organizations. These "Deep Dive" workshops would normally cost hundreds of dollars to attend, but YNPN-TC is offering these sessions to our local members free of charge. About The Workshops Like we mentioned above, there are two separate workshops to choose from, each with limited seating. You can apply to both, but you will only be selected for one (unless you somehow have superhuman powers that enable you to be in two places at once - if that's the case, please tell us what radioactive spider bit you and where to find it). The workshops will take place on Friday, June 27th from 10:30am - 5:00pm. Your two amazing workshop options to choose from are: 1. Connecting Career to Purpose with Echoing Green's Work on Purpose Program YNPN is partnering with Echoing Green to teach you how to become a Work on Purpose facilitator. As a Work on Purpose facilitator, you will acquire the tools you need to lead workshops for your community and help equip others with the skills they need to realize their unique way to make social impact. Throughout its 25 year history, Echoing Green has performed thousands of in­depth interviews with its world-­changing social entrepreneurship Fellows and has observed ten principles that lead individuals to fulfilling work that makes the world a better place. These ten principles are the cornerstone of Echoing Green's Work on Purpose curriculum and training. Work on Purpose would be a valuable curriculum to bring back to your community because it provides inspiration and frameworks to support a wide spectrum of young people seeking to make the world a better place in a way that is uniquely right for them. If you are excited about facilitating group workshops and passionate about helping others with personal and professional development so they can pursue meaningful work, then this is the Deep Dive for you! Apply Here 2. Inclusive Leaders Create Inclusive Communities: Diving In An important conversation in today's workplace centers around this question: Why and how do we move from inclusion as a value to inclusion as a practice? This year, by offering a day-long intensive training track with the International Institute for Sustained Dialogue, we believe we can begin to move our communities towards addressing that question for the long haul. The International Institute for Sustained Dialogue develops everyday leaders who engage differences as strengths to improve their campuses, workplaces, and communities. Sustained Dialogue is a five-stage social change model that is designed to transform relationships and create informed community change. Participants in this Deep Dive will learn how to be boundary spanners in their organizations and communities, practice empathy, form traits of authentic leadership, frameworks for better decision-making, and work in diverse teams. There’s a growing threat that, if we fail to act, could profoundly affect our lives. Like many species, bees and other insect pollinators are facing environmental challenges – the biggest of which is loss of native habitat – that jeopardize their very existence. At our next Policy and a Pint, we’ll talk about threats to the state’s insect population, and what could be devastating consequences for our food supply, our economy – and us. We’ll also talk about what each of us can do to slow the threat, and eventually, bring back the bees. Host Steve Seel will be joined by guests Gary Reuter from the U of M’s Bee lab, food writer Dara Moskowitz-Grumdahl from Mpls/St. Paul Magazine who’s been investigating this topic, and Joseph Zachmann from the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. The bottom line: we’re the problem, but we’re also the solution.

Accepting Applications: 2014-2015 Humphrey School of Public Affairs Policy Fellows

Applications are now available for the 2014-2015 Policy Fellows program at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey School of Public Affairs. The Policy Fellows program brings together a cohort of 35 mid-career Minnesota leaders from business, nonprofit, and government sectors for a unique nine-month professional development experience. Applications are due May 30, 2014 for the program beginning in September.

Policy Fellows Application Process and Frequently Asked Questions

The Policy Fellows program requires participants to make a commitment to professional and personal growth as part of a cohort. Fellows meet once a month as a group between September and early June (most often on Fridays), and travel to Washington, D.C., for a multi-day study trip with prominent elected officials and national leaders in public affairs. Fellows also engage in a collaboratively designed small-group project, working with community partners to address a public policy issue. Policy Fellows can expect to spend 10 to 15 hours per month on activities related to the program. Click here for more program information.

Application Process and Program Fee

Applications and recommendation letters for the 2014-2015 Policy Fellows program are due by Friday, May 30, 2014. The application form asks for basic information, such as work history and community involvement, along with a brief essay. We also require two letters of recommendation. These can be from current or former employers, program alumni, or people you know in the community.

For 2014-2015, the program fee is $6,500. Some employers pay the program fee in part or in full from professional development funds. Scholarships are available, though all Fellows are asked to make some contribution to their program fee. Scholarship requests are not part of the application process; after new Fellows are selected, we follow up with each individual regarding their scholarship needs.

Scholarships specifically for nonprofit sector participants are made possible by generous gifts from the George Family Foundation and the Jay and Rose Phillips Family Foundation of Minnesota.

Join the 2014 "Our Minnesota" Cascading Conversations Tour Advance Team!

We're excited announce that Alexis Walstad and Taylor Vollmer will serve as 2014 Advance Team Co-Coordinators for the "Our Minnesota" Cascading Conversations Tour! Do you want to join the team? We're looking for curious minds and deep listeners to help engage and capture key insights about what emerging leaders care about and envision for the future of Minnesota. Whether interviewer or interviewee, we'd love to have you as part of the conversation this summer!

Our Minnesota: Building a State of Trust

We – Alexis Walstad and Taylor Vollmer – extend to you an invitation to serve as a member of the 2014 Advance Team as we embark on our second tour. An advance team prepares people and places for powerful events and meaningful connections; our hope is that you’ll consider joining us.

The “Our Minnesota” Cascading Conversations Tour is a process designed to engage emerging leaders in Minnesota in meaningful conversations with each other with the purpose of building trust, fostering relationships, and discovering a shared vision for Minnesota's future. The conversations will cascade from many different starting points. As a member of the Advance Team, your role would involve activating some of those starting points by initiating at least three conversations and then sharing the highlights of those conversations by mid-August (which will conclude the first leg of this tour). We have prepared strategies on how to go about starting those conversations – but that will come later. Before you decide to climb aboard, we realize you would probably like to familiarize yourself with the work we do at Minnesota Rising and the purpose of our tour. To accommodate this, we welcome you to visit our blog and the Cascading Conversations Tour webpage.

Assuming your interest, we would like to invite you to our Orientation, which will take place in the Twin Cities on a weeknight during the week of May 18th . Orientation will be a chance for you to participate in your first conversation. Since our organization values the impact of collaboration, part of your welcome will include party food and various yard games – bring your competitive pants! If you agree to join us, we will plan to check in with you semi-regularly (1-2 times over the months of your commitment), and we'll also be available to connect at any time if you have questions.

Both of us have hosted numerous conversations thus far, and we have found the process highly energizing, both for ourselves and those we've invited to participate. We believe you’d similarly benefit from our initiatives. Please let us know by Thursday, May 1 if you're willing to serve as a member of the Advance Team for the “Our Minnesota” Cascading Conversations Tour. We will then follow up with you about Orientation and next steps.

Break the Bubble: Basis + Back-to-Back Summer Events

Our friends over at Break the Bubble have got some fun plans lined up for this summer and they'd love you to join them! Read on to learn about the basis of their community-building efforts and check out their schedule of activities. Mark your calendars for their ice-breaking fun and come on out to help break the bubble!

Break the Bubble was created to solve a big problem: How do you make new friends in the Twin Cities? Whether you just moved here, or have lived here your whole life, it can be challenging to make friends. Some call it "Minnesota Nice," while others say "Minnesotans will give you directions anywhere, except to their lake cabin." No matter how you say it, making friends here is hard.

We create a crucible for friend-making by regularly bringing together fun, interesting people at venues across the Twin Cities. Our events feature themes that get people talking.  When you come to an event, we'll give you a name tag where you'll put your answer to the night's theme. Boom! Instant ice-breaker. You talk to people - at one event or over the course of a few - and when you find someone you'd like to hang out with, invite them to do something.
