[#mnrising Dispatch] May 2014
Happy 5th birthday to Minnesota Rising! Five years ago, we started this journey with a blog and a question: what might happen if the rising generation came together to build relationships and trust, began exploring our generational values and visions for the future of Minnesota, and started to develop the collective capacity to lead our communities collaboratively? While the answer is still emerging, we believe that what we've developed in the past five years - our online presence, annual Un/Conference, "Our Minnesota" Cascading Conversations Tour, and Collaborative Competence Learning Labs Series - has given us a process and path forward. As we celebrate our anniversary, we also celebrate all of you in our community, who we have learned from, partnered with, and with whom we will continue to walk alongside as we work to ensure a state that serves and supports all Minnesotans into the future!

#bushCON Recap: Be on purpose
By Taylor Vollmer, Minnesota Rising
Walking away from the inaugural bushCONNECT event, a single thought resonated within me: be on purpose. A double entendre, its more-rehearsed interpretation hit me right out of the gates (or, well, doors) - beon purpose, exist for a reason. What's more is that my reflection ended in my appreciation of the other end of the entendre, the end which I had hardly before considered: being onpurpose.
In his keynote interview, Steve Johnson posed what he believes essential to environments that foster the development of good ideas. From Minnesota Rising's own Fail Lab to tours of Izzy's Ice Cream's new manufacturing facility or from the Theater of Public Policy's improv crash course to the Initiative Foundation's conversation on how not to have a conversation, thirty breakout sessions highlighted local organizations' initiation of innovation, response to failure, and emphasis on learning. Generation Now Leadership Visit 2014
Building on the enormous success of the inaugural visit to Milwaukee last year, the 2nd annual Generation Now Leadership Visit (GNLV) is a 3-day trip to Fargo for promising, innovative leaders like you! The GNLV wants delegates looking for a unique opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills for personal and civic development.
We will see, experience, and explore as much of Fargo as possible through presentations by various nonprofits, government agencies and business leaders who influence civic decision-making and are invested in their community's development. In addition to two days of a civic-driven agenda, delegates will attend the OTA-Pollen Fargo event and receive exclusive access to national thought leaders. [Read more.]

YNPN LGBTQ and Allies Reception
Co-sponsored by Minnesota Rising
Did you know that the national Young Nonprofit Professionals Network conference is happening during Twin Cities Pride weekend? More than 100 nonprofit YPs will be in town as the Twin Cities celebrate LGBTQ Pride!
The Twin Cities and Minnesota boast some pretty amazing LGBTQ rights accomplishments. From being the first state to add both gender identity/sexual orientation at the same time to its human rights statute to being home to the world's only Hmong LGBTQ organization, the land of 10,000 lakes has quite a bit to be proud about when it comes to LGBTQ equality.
This will be a great chance to meet with LGBTQ and allied young professionals for a casual and fun happy hour. Come on out to the Courtyard Marriott to mix and mingle on Friday, June 27 and kick off your Pride weekend with us! [Read more.]

Why Minnesota Rising Matters [to]: Tanya Schmitt
By Tanya Schmitt
Minnesota is a wonderful place. I'm biased - I grew up in small town, central Minnesota and moved to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota. I complain when we enter the sixth month of winter each year, and love to travel to new cities (especially to get away from the cold) yet every time I return to Minneapolis and see the skyline, I am reminded just how much I love this place. It is my home - I choose to live here. There are people who might disagree, but Livibility agrees with me. It's because I love Minnesota, that the Minnesota Rising community is so important to me.
