[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] January 2016

[#mnrising Dispatch] January 2016

Happy new year! We kicked off 2016 with an illuminating event this past week co-hosted by MPR News host Tom Weber entitled, "New Year, New Conversations with Minnesota Rising." With a focus on race, politics, and media, participants at Sweeney's Saloon shared their insights on the at-times polarizing and paralyzing political dynamics and also reminded each other of the seeds of hope currently present in our communities and that can be conjured up by imagining a politics that works. There is a clear appetite for continuing to gather together, dialogue, and take action to shift, in ways big and small, structures and institutions in order that we reflect more equitable investment and outcomes across this land we presently refer to as Minnesota.

To continue the conversation and help emerging leaders develop the collective capacity to speak bravely and act boldly, join us at the next Sounding Board Session on Monday, February 1 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm. RSVP to minnesotarising[at]gmail.com for details!

Workforce challenges spur region-wide discussions

Chet Bodin, Greater Minnesota Rising

As the end of 2015 nears, it's important to revisit the trends that inspired Greater Minnesota Rising (GMR), and how our research evolved this year. Economically speaking, 2015 saw a return to unemployment reminiscent of the 1990's and a record number of job vacancies. It's likely that Baby Boomers will retire at an even faster pace in 2016, and Millennials will continue to fill the void. What will be missed are the years of experience, vast connections, and leadership traits of the Baby Boomer generation. These assets, honed over decades, won't be easy to replace. By numbers alone, it will be nearly impossible. [Read more.]

Facing Race

Ambassador Awards Nominations due 2/15

The Facing Race Ambassador Awards proudly presented by The Saint Paul Foundation celebrate and honor the leadership of individuals working toward racial equity and supporting the vitality of communities of color in Minnesota. Racial inequity cuts across many facets of our society, limiting access, opportunity and quality of life. Unsung heroes across the state from every walk of life are addressing the pervasiveness of racial inequity by raising awareness of its presence and destructive impact and finding ways to eliminate it from our systems and practices. We honor their work. 2016 marks the 10th anniversary of the Facing Race Ambassador Awards. [Read more.]
