[Minnesota Rising Dispatch] April 2017

[#mnrising Dispatch] April 2017

April showers bring May flowers. Just as the water nurtures what's needed to let life bloom, those of us who joined together for the LOCUS "Embodying Resilience, Empowering Ourselves" workshop earlier this month had a chance to nourish our minds, bodies, and spirits through somatic healing and mindful yoga. In line with this and the springtime rain of late, we offer the poem, "Be Like Water," by Reverend Kendra Ford:

run deep run clear
fill any space to its
own dimensions
respond to the moon, to gravity
change colors with the light
hold your temperature longer
than the surrounding air
take the coast by storm
go under ground
bend light
be the one thing people need, even when they’re fasting
eat boulders, quietly
be a universal solvent

Seeking Young Entrepreneurs

Minnesota Business

From Steve LeBeau, Editor in Chief, Minnesota Business: "As part of Minnesota Business magazine’s continued commitment to young entrepreneurs, we invite entrepreneurs aged 35 and under to fill out the form below with basic information about you and your company. From this database we will choose people/businesses to write about during the year, and we will devote the August 2017 issue to young entrepreneurs. We will give priority to revenue-generating young entrepreneurs. The deadline for inclusion in the August 2017 issue is May 1, 2017." You must be 35 years old or younger as of August 2017. You must be the founder of your company. We recognize that entrepreneurial spirit can be found in many roles, but for our purposes we are only looking for those who have founded a new company. If you have a co-founder that you would like to be recognized as a Young Entrepreneur as well, he or she must fill out a separate form. [Read more.]

Critical Issues Forum: Moving Data into Action

Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce

Cross-sector leaders throughout the MSP region look at a shared dashboard to track competitiveness on key indicators like migration of talent. Curious how we stack up against the top metros across the country? Look to the 2017 Dashboard when it gets published next month. On May 12 you can attend the release breakfast hosted by the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce and GREATER MSP. The Regional Indicators Dashboard compares this region’s progress on critical economic, social and environmental measures against other peer cities across the country. This Critical Issues Forum will dive deep into the 2017 Dashboard results. Expect calls to action based on a thorough analysis of the data and announcements about new regional collaborations focused on the Dashboard metrics. [Read more.]

Leaders of Today and Tomorrow is sponsored by the Minnesota Women’s Consortium and operates through support of the George Family Foundation and individual donors. Please email a resume and statement of interest to Amanda Varley with LOTT Advisory Board in the subject line. "Giving It All Away: Doing Well in Business While Doing Good in the World"

Humphrey School of Public Affairs

Please join us for a conversation with Bob Forrester, Newman's Own Foundation President and CEO, and Laura Bloomberg, Humphrey School of Public Affairs Associate Dean, on the history of Newman's Own from its founding by Hollywood actor Paul Newman in 1982 through present day. The discussion will include a broad overview of the company's business model including its governance structure, revenues and profits, and how its business and philanthropy interface. Forrester will share the challenges and opportunities associated with the company's unique business model, based on 100% of profits going to charity. This concept was considered by some as doomed to fail from the beginning, but has prevailed and is going strong after 35 years in a competitive industry. [Read more.]
