July is recognized as Disability Pride Month and provides an opportunity to honor the achievements, history, and experiences of the disability community. Nationally, July is the anniversary of the landmark American with Disabilities Act, advancing civil rights and expanding inclusion in society. Read on in this month's Dispatch for upcoming local events to support increased access and belonging for neurodiverse and other marginalized communities. We all do better when we all do better.

Studio Thirteen Future Filmmakers Lab

Studio Thirteen is an intensive lab for talented creative youths who are interested in honing their filmmaking skills. Created for young artists who wish to further their media arts education in a collaborative environment, participants will work in small teams to create an impactful short film over the course of thirteen weeks while learning the ins-and-outs of filmmaking. Offering one of the few training grounds for student filmmakers, this program provides students grades 9-12 the opportunity to gain hands-on vocational experience while receiving guidance and support every step of the way. Truth in History

The Truth in History Project seeks to highlight the communities that make Minnesota home, weaving together diverse narratives that build solidarity across cultures among Minnesota’s BIPOC communities. In its current iteration, Linking Leaders’ Truth in History Project is producing videos and conversation guides featuring the voices and stories of Minnesota’s Indigenous communities and other communities of color. Applications for Minnesota-based BIPOC storytellers to participate in video project deadline is Saturday, September 30. [Apply online.]

Fiscal Sponsorship Emerging Nonprofits Cohort

This fall, with the support of the Otto Bremer Trust and Old National Bank, Propel is launching their first-ever Emerging Nonprofits Cohort. The nine-month Cohort will provide a group of emerging nonprofit leaders with space, resources, and a $5,000 grant to explore these common experiences while building strong, supportive relationships with their peers. The Cohort prioritizes organizations working in communities impacted by systemic oppression and/or serving groups who have been historically excluded from accessing resources. There is no cost for participation. Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute

Applications for the Twin Cities Boards and Commissions Leadership Institute (BCLI) are now open! BCLI is a seven-month fellowship that supports, trains, and helps place Black, Indigenous, people of color and other underrepresented community members on city and county publicly appointed boards and commissions that influence and impact equity in the Twin Cities Metro Area in economic development, health, housing, transit, and workforce development. June kicked off Pride month, recognizing that what starts as a riot can sustain into a colorful movement and transform into ongoing advocacy for inclusion. In the midst was Juneteenth, the recognition that not one of us is free until all of us is free and we must celebrate and carry on with Jubilee. The work remains as protections to support those most impacted by injustice are continually eroded and at risk, in order that we may all celebrate freedom across our nation on Independence Day. Wishing us to be the home of the brave!

Collective Abundance Fund

The NDN Collective Abundance Fund will support Indigenous individuals and families residing within the tri-state region of MN, ND, and SD in the rebuilding of Indigenous and generational wealth. Awarded Grantees will receive flexible grants of $25,000 or $50,000 to invest in and support their self-determined wealth-building activities. NDN Collective’s principles and strategies to Defend, Develop & Decolonize inspire all Collective work, therefore wealth-building plans must reflect sustainable, generational, regenerative values. Grant term start dates for selected grantees are scheduled to begin October 1, 2023. [Learn more.]

2023 Wellspring Fund Grant

Apply for a 2023 Wellspring Fund grant June 5, 2023 through July 18, 2023. The Wellspring Fund is dedicated to nourishing organizations that have deep roots and long horizons. Wellspring grants build meaningful capacity for BIPOC-led organizations to do long term power building and organizing for systems change. Grants will provide $90,000 of project-based support per year over four years, for a total of $360,000. These grants support projects that are developing innovative and impactful approaches to building community power and advocating for social change in Minnesota. [Apply online.]

2023-2024 Cohort

Elizabeth Kearney Women’s Leadership (EKWL) is a strengths-based leadership program with a gender and racial justice lens. The program takes a cohort of women through professional and personal leadership development. Participants identify their strengths, build skills, learn about community and civic engagement, network, hear from guest speakers, and leave prepared to address common leadership challenges facing women. The 10-month program begins September 2023 and ends June 2024.  Applications are due in the first week of July. A limited number of partial scholarships are available. [Read more.]

Open Road Fund

The Open Road Fund was created to serve Black descendants of the Atlantic Slave Trade, especially formerly incarcerated folks, single parents, senior citizens, those living with disabilities, LGBTQ+, and more. Open Road Fund will award $50,000 grants to at least 800 Black residents in the region through 2031. These resources can be used for several wealth-building projects, including housing, education, financial well-being, healing, and economic justice—and we encourage all applicants to identify the area of focus that best suits their path to building Black wealth.  Applications close for the fund on July 28, 2023. May bloomed with the beginnings of transitions to be fully realized in June with the Solstice, end of the academic calendar year, and arrival hot summer weather that creates new and familiar opportunities to experience and enjoy Mni Sota Makoce. Pride Month kicks off to commemorate the riotous spirit of protest and advocacy as well as celebrate and uplift LGBTQIA2S+ community members, including events shared in this month's Dispatch. 2023-2024 Leadership Twin Cities

Leadership Twin Cities develops individuals into civic and community leaders. This nine-month long program provides a deep dive into the critical issues impacting the Minneapolis-Saint Paul region with a focus on awareness, systems thinking, and civic action to foster inclusive regional growth. This program is invaluable for individuals seeking to build their understanding of our community’s greatest challenges, develop a robust network of cross-sector civic leaders, and build their own capacity to influence systemic change. Twin Cities Pride Festival

The Twin Cities Pride Festival is a CELEBRATION of the LGBTQ+ Community. This year’s Festival and parade theme is Elevate and Amplify: "It is more important than ever to act with intentionality, purpose and to highlight different voices while bringing other marginalized communities with us." Throughout the month of June, the Twin Cities Pride line-up includes Cheers to Pride, Grand Marshal Reception, Family Fun Day, Pride Festival, Rainbow Run 5K My Way, and the Pride March. Twin Cities is seeking volunteers as well as clothing donations for the Rainbow Wardrobe. [Learn more.]

Respectful Conversations Lead Facilitator Application

Minnesota Council of Churches Respectful Conversations are structured, facilitated conversations designed not to change minds but soften hearts. Empathy is built and relationships are strengthened in faith communities, community organizations, institutes of higher education, membership associations and municipalities through facilitator training and conversation experiences. This year MCC is planning to train a diverse cohort of MCC Respectful Conversations Lead Facilitators. Doing so will expand the base of cultural assumptions and competencies from which they help to depolarize communities. [Learn more.]

Neighborhood Leadership Program (NLP)

The NLP is a seven-month program that brings a cohort of up to 20, 18 years of age or older, in Dakota and Anishinaabe territory, also known as the Greater Twin Cities area. NLP aims to grow people’s capacity to practice self-awareness, working across differences, and value-based action. The program runs September 2023 - April 2024 and is open to applicants who are both early and seasoned in their leadership journey. With Mercury currently retrograde, annual snowfall records broken across the state, and an unprecedented four straight days of 80+ temps, April has signaled transitions of all sorts. As we prepare for American Indian Month in Minnesota and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month nationally, and mark three years since the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, may we recognize the ways our histories intersect and act to categorically impact how our destinies are bound up together. See this month's Dispatch for opportunities to connect, celebrate, and catalyze our communities throughout the month of May. 

2024-2025 Initiators Fellowship

The Initiators Fellowship is designed for idea and early-stage entrepreneurs in Greater Minnesota eager to tackle a social or environmental challenge while pursuing leadership growth. All ventures must have a home in the Initiators Fellowship’s 53-county and six native nations region. This program offers Fellows wrap-around support and guidance in their enterprise and leadership journey via individual support and a collective cohort format. The 2024-2025 Initiators Fellowship application will open on May 1 and close at noon on June 15. AAPI Generations Conference

Theater Mu will host the AAPI Generations Conference May 19-21 at Park Square Theatre in celebration of AAPI Heritage Month along with Theatre Mu’s 30th anniversary. The event will include guests of honor David Henry Hwang, Amy Hill, and Mu co-founding artistic director Rick Shiomi. The opening plenary will feature University of Minnesota professor and Asian American theatre historian Dr. Josephine Lee discussing with Hwang, Hill, and Shiomi their experiences and the changes they’ve seen in Asian American theatre. Highlights of the weekend include a performance by TaikoArts Midwest and the New Eyes play-reading festival, Mu’s longest running tradition. 2023-2024 Policy Fellows

The Policy Fellows program is one of the country’s most respected public affairs leadership experiences for emerging and mid-career professionals. Each year, approximately 35 leaders from government, business/industry, and nonprofit organizations from around the state are selected through a competitive application process. During the nine-month program Fellows from the Twin Cities area and across greater Minnesota come together as a cohort once a month and travel together to Washington, DC, for a multi-day study trip. The application for the 2023-2024 cohort is now open until Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 11:59 pm CDT. The shortest month of the year and yet so full, with Minnesota snowstorms and snow emergencies, Valentine's and Galentine's, and respective resets and restarts. And throughout, a chance to honor Black History in Minnesota through supporting Melanin in Motion, listening to and amplifying Black voices and perspectives, and advocating to ensure equity for all until Justice Just Is. May we continue to act on Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s wisdom to build beloved community here and now: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that."

Bloom in Bloomington

Bloom in Bloomington is a youth workforce program offering young people aged 16 to 24 summer internship experiences. Applicants must live in Bloomington or attend high school or college in the city. There is an eight-week internship for current high school students who are at least 16 years old, including a weekly mandated leadership institute. Anticipated pay for this program starts at $15 per hour. There is a 12-week internship program for those who are at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent. If you're interested in supporting your community, consider Summer Impact Corps, an AmeriCorps program. There are openings across the Twin Cities in the areas of climate mitigation, K-8 education, and affordable housing access. Paid, full-time positions offer an opportunity to build your resume and earn money for school for you or your family. Choose to serve starting in May or June and ending in August. Minnesota RUX

The Minnesota Rural-Urban Exchange cohort is a creative leadership program designed to develop skills and confidence, grow social capital, and cultivate relationships across racial, economic and geographic divides. RUX brings us to one another’s places to better understand who we are, what we love, what we fear, and what we need from one another. Each gathering is curated as a long-weekend retreat and will be hosted in various rural and urban communities across the state. We are currently looking for twelve people to join our Minnesota RUX cohort. A team of staff, interns, and authors has combed through over FIFTY Cow Tipping books to create a gorgeous compilation of genre-pushing, silly, profound, stand-out works. Come be the first to grab a shiny new copy and celebrate the release of this new collection with the authors on Thursday March 2nd from 7pm - 9pm. Featuring a gorgeous and thought provoking visual art exhibit showcasing Art for All artists from across the state with disabilities at the Northrup King building, live music by Rabeca, provided refreshments and extra snacks for sale by Noshing with Netta.
